U.S. Patent Agent Trainee

Laine IP Oy is looking for a motivated and detail oriented U.S. Patent Agent Trainee to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or a student nearing graduation with a Chemistry degree who is interested in a career at the intersection of science, law, and innovation.

In this role, you will work closely with experienced patent professionals to support the drafting and prosecution of U.S. patent applications. You will gain hands on experience in intellectual property while developing a deep understanding of how cutting edge inventions are protected internationally.

Laine IP Oy was established in 1979 and has grown into a leading intellectual property firm. The firm has one of the largest chemistry teams in Finland and the largest U.S. team in the Nordic region. Our U.S. team was established in 2010 and now consists of 7 professionals, namely 5 practitioners and 2 paralegals. The team offers a supportive environment and strong mentorship.

What we are looking for

  • A recent or upcoming graduate with a degree in Chemistry (BSc (US only), MSc, PhD, or equivalent). A Masters Degree or greater is required if your degree is from a Finnish university.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work both independently and as part of a team.

Are you a U.S. citizen residing in Finland with a technical degree? Laine IP invites you to apply for a U.S. Patent Agent Trainee position in our dynamic US Team.

Uniquely, U.S. citizens may qualify for and practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) while residing outside the U.S. Thus, in 2010, Laine IP established its own internal U.S Team at Laine IP with the mission of delivering high quality U.S. IP services to the firm’s clients from Finland. The US Team has been continuously operating since and recently achieved a milestone by securing its 500th U.S. Patent on behalf of the firm’s clients.

You are the person we are looking for, if:

  • You are a U.S. Citizen and already reside in Finland;
  • You have (or will have) a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in computer science; electrical, mechanical, or other engineering; or in natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology);
  • Possess key traits, such as meticulous attention to detail, rapid learning capabilities, robust intellectual curiosity, and excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  • Adapt well to feedback, and enjoy intellectual challenges, as well as learning on a daily basis.

The U.S. Patent Agent Trainee position is a paid position during which you will have the opportunity to learn the profession via independent work, self-study, and tutoring. No prior experience in intellectual property is required. However, you should have a degree in engineering or natural sciences, or be on track to completing one in the near future. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Finnish is advantageous, though not mandatory.

Your Role and Growth Opportunities:

In addition, as a U.S. Patent Agent Trainee, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. Patent system by assisting in the preparation of U.S. patent applications, by assisting in the drafting of responses to Office Actions issued by the USPTO, and by filing relevant documents. Further, you will prepare for the USPTO qualifying examination to become a registered U.S. Patent Agent.
